Artist in Residence

Sault Artist in Residence

Sault is so proud to have the wonderfully talented James Robertson as our Artist in Residence.

Jodi and Damien first met James at Sault and were completely taken by his evocative sky-scapes. It’s wonderful to meet such a humble artist who can create a piece of art that captures the brilliance of the ever-changing sky, with his wonderfully clever tiny narratives that add humour and thought to his work.

James Robertson-lives and works from his home in Mt. Franklin, Daylesford

James studied Industrial Design at Swinburne University Melbourne. After 10 years as a designer and Automotive design engineer he discovered his passion for painting. Self-taught, he is continually striving to capture atmosphere, tension and drama whilst incorporating a humorous but contemplative narrative. James has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney, New York, Chicago and Shanghai.

“World of Striking Realism. Nothing has a single meaning, and the paradox of simplicity lies in its complexity. So it is with the paintings of James Robertson, who delights in images of disarming directness, readily accessible in their striking realism, yet given a twist or bite that turns a smile into laughter, and then a lot of afterthought. In the plethora of visual images of this contemporary world, Robertson’s paintings fascinate through their extraordinary illusionism – so real that they seem to reach beyond reality and, through their heightened perception, create a world of their own.” – David Thomas (Professor Fine Art RMIT).

Robertson’s work is included in the following collections:
MM&E Capital PTY Limited – Melbourne; Sonray Capital Markets; Babcock & Brown, Melbourne Head Office; Southern Media Asia; Kompressor Pty Ltd, Melbourne; Sirromet Wines Pty Ltd, QLD; Undertow Media, VIC; Lakos Architects, VIC; Red Rock Leisure Pty Ltd, VIC; House On The Hill Gallery, VIC; Thierry B Gallery, VIC; Roger David Pty Ltd, VIC;
Linfox Pty Ltd, VIC; and in private collections throughout Australia, Singapore, Canada, USA and China.
